There’s a lot you can learn being the new kid on the block that can translate into setting a positive tone on how you handle your adult life. It could be your career decisions, financial, or family decisions but there’s a lot to learn from a 12 year old.
Twelve year old Charlie Moore is a good kid whose parents have been hit with hard times. His father has been unemployed for 9 months. He buys his shoes and clothes from WalMart. His family abruptly moved at the end of August to a new state and a new school in order to take a chance for better opportunities. He shares a studio with his parents, and a bed with his brother. Charlie is considered homeless and is living in a one income household that has to pay for 4 adults and 4 children. Charlie lives in Texas but doesn’t play football and for awhile sat alone at the lunch table when school started. It’s the kid that nobody knew that managed to become Student of the Month.
So how does a kid that nobody knew at all, suddenly become the kid everyone wants to know in as little as 30 days?
1) Humility – Charlie Moore is a humble kid and very grateful for everything that he has. He still keeps a sense of style even if the clothes are from Walmart or the thrift store. At his old school he narrowly made it to symphonic band as a trumpet player, then he moved schools. Where nobody knew him, he was forced to play in a lower level band. He did not complain or grumble, he was happy to be where he was at.
2) Hard Work – he puts in effort that goes above and beyond the ordinary task at hand. Charlie is an office aide; that is one of his electives. He did not get to choose electives he was assigned electives that weren’t full. As an office aide, he regularly volunteers for tasks and continually competes with himself and the other office aides on who can complete their assigned tasks the fastest.
3) Sets High Goals – As an honors student, Charlie has 4 honors classes where in addition to his regularly assigned projects he also had to complete the assigned summer projects since he was a new student. He accomplished all of this ahead of schedule. He is also not afraid to challenge himself and lets everyone know it. For a recent band fundraiser, he needed the courage to ask strangers to support his cause. He asked the office administrators and the school principal. He was not afraid to talk to his superiors and establish a connection and a relationship with them. In the end, it’s these same administrators that nominated him for Student of the Month.
4) Support Network – Charlie has a very loving and supporting family. There is no alcohol or substance abuse. They are involved in all of his activities. He lives with a large extended family that also participates in his activities. He is sometimes given responsibility to care for his younger brother and cousins. It’s these opportunities that give him a sense of belonging, that he is a valued member as well as a leader to his younger brother and cousins.
5) Kind – Charlie is kind and courteous. He doesn’t get into fights at school and is gracious to everyone. People are drawn to his big, bright smile that is always displayed on his face and his demeanor.
Charlie Moore is well deserving of being Student of the Month. It is characteristics like these that most adults lack to move up into a leadership position at work. It’s not just your certifications or your degrees, it’s your character that leaves an impression upon others. Do you have those character traits as mentioned above so that you can be student of the month? Life is a classroom and we are all students.
